Jonathan Elendu: As Darkness Hovers

Since Tuesday when the news of the arrest by men of the State Security Service (SSS)of Jonathan Elendu of elendureports.com broke, our hearts have been in our hands. That the government has chosen take the evil way, hounding journalists and closing down media houses is no longer news. But with the arrest of Jonathan, the tragedy of this government's lack of respect for the rule of law really drives home.

At least now we know that Elendureports.com is classified by the government as a guerrilla news agency and it has a thing or two against"citizen reporting" websites. We understand that the SSS has refused him access his lawyers and family. How much worse can it get?

Yar 'Adua not only wins a medal for lack of vision, he also seems set to top us all in stupidity! Whatever the case may be, let them release Jonathan Elendu NOW!

This is a shocker for Nigerian bloggers. I guess if this situation is not nibbed in the bud, blogging may be classified as a criminal activity in Nigeria.

We must not keep quiet about this. Freedom of Speech must not die in Nigeria.

It scares me...it scares me stiff. I know the kind of blog I run and I feel like a candidate for an SSS pick up now. But must it shut us up? Must it derail our desire to pull Nigeria through? Everyone must say No to this evil. We must say No to this evil

We can't allow ourselves to be scared, you know. All we can do is continue to educate people about the issues. Hopefully at the end of the day, respect for others will prevail.

Don't forget to join us in the online rally this Friday October 31st. Just use "FREE JONATHAN ELENDU NOW!" as the title of your blog post and FaceBook Status. Visit the Facebook page here or stop by Nigerian Curiosity.

Elendu is a Nigerian Blogger that was detained. He is now under medical care but is not free to return to his family in America. Hence the protest.

Take care!
